At Least They Aren't Wearing Sequins!

This is just so sad! The NY Times has a story today about a Canadian TV show called "Battle of the Blades". It could best be described as "Ice Dancing With the Stars". In this case, it is female figure skaters doing ice-dancing routines with retired NHL players. Interestingly, 3 of the former players listed are the last players you'd expect in this type of thing.....former goons Tie Domi and Bob Probert, and the hated Claude Lemieux.

It's one thing for D-list celebrities and attention-craving jackasses like Tom Delay to appear in sequins on "Dancing With the Stars". But hockey players? It is all too sad.

The only encouraging part of the story is this line:
The women wear conventional skating costumes — skimpy and spangly — but the men, for the most part, have been spared the Spandex and satin pants, although Domi made his final appearance in a short-sleeved pink shirt.

Tie Domi in a pink shirt. I am just so glad we can't get this show in Colorado!

I've seen a bit of it, but couldn't sit through an episode. Ex-Sabre Craig Simpson was on it as well. Think this will come up at the next old-timers game?

An update from Canada:

TORONTO — The elimination-style reality show "Battle of the Blades" will skate another season.

CBC says its celebrity-packed hit series will return next fall with another round of figure-skating competition.

The first season wrapped up Monday with a finale that crowned former Edmonton Oiler Craig Simpson and Olympic gold medallist Jamie Sale best on ice.

The show paired retired NHLers with former figure skating stars.

CBC says it proved to be a ratings smash, routinely drawing in 1.7 million viewers for its performance episodes and more than 1.3 million for the results shows.

Executive producer John Brunton says they're in talks to franchise the series to other countries.

"It has tremendous international potential as a big name sports and entertainment brand, and we look forward to growing this franchise significantly over the coming years," Brunton said Wednesday in a release.
