I've seen this ad from Progressive Insurance several times on TV. They say they now will cover your pet under your auto insurance for no extra cost. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a pet in your car already be covered by your auto insurance, just as your golf clubs or computer would? Seems to me this is classic marketing BS......giving you a benefit you already had.

Glenn--great blog. I'm with you when it comes to marketing BS--companies telling me about something as if it's an added benefit, but come to find out I already pay for it. I work for Progressive and we wouldn't pull your dog's tail about this--when we introduced our pet injury coverage, it was the first to cover dogs and cats riding in cars. Pet lovers like it, so some other companies have followed suit.
And, about your golf clubs and computer, if they were stolen, they would generally be covered, but under your homeowner's policy, not your auto policy. Auto insurance coverage for theft of stuff in the car is generally only permanently affixed stuff, not something you might leave in your car like golf clubs.
